Beloved's hold on Sethe

Beloved recovers from her initial illness and becomes increasingly attached to Sethe. She follows Sethe everywhere, watches her constantly, and demands to hear stories about her past. Sethe, flattered by Beloved's devotion, finds herself willingly telling painful memories she has long suppressed. Beloved's questions are oddly specific, as if she already knows the answers. Denver, who has formed a deep bond with Beloved, becomes protective of her, while Paul D grows suspicious and uncomfortable with Beloved's influence over Sethe.
