Dhúmráksha
RamayanaDhúmráksha is a giant commander in Ravana’s forces whose sortie briefly turns the battle against the Vánars. His assault ends when Hanúmán rallies against the rout and crushes him with a rock, making his death a reversal in the fighting.
Identity and Command
Ravana orders Dhúmráksha to lead his bravest warriors into battle. The command presents him as a trusted force sent to break through the enemy line, not as a solitary fighter: he rushes out with troops, and the assault advances amid elephants, chariots, and horses.
The Sortie
The Vánars see the giant force pour from the gate and meet a fast-moving charge. The attack scatters them; they turn and flee in every direction. Dhúmráksha’s entry thus achieves an immediate battlefield effect, disrupting the opposing army before Hanúmán intervenes.
Hanúmán’s Counterattack and Death
Hanúmán sees the Vánars running and lifts a great rock. He strikes Dhúmráksha, who springs at his opponent again despite the wound. Hanúmán brings the rock down on the giant’s head with irresistible force; Dhúmráksha’s limbs are crushed, and he is left a shapeless mass.
Narrative Role
Dhúmráksha’s brief appearance is structured around a reversal: a commander sent to force a path through the enemy first drives the Vánars into flight, then becomes the target of Hanúmán’s counterattack. His death halts the momentum of the sortie and establishes Hanúmán as the figure who answers the army’s rout with decisive violence.
