Surasa

Ramayana

Surasa, the Nāgas’ mother, tests Hanumán during his leap toward Lanka. Her encounter, arranged by the gods and witnessed by sages and celestial bards, checks his readiness for the mission; after he meets her challenge without fear, she restores her former shape and lets him continue in search of Sítá.

Identity and Role

Surasa is identified in this episode through her kinship with the Nāgas. The gods, sages, and heavenly bards approach her as Hanumán flies on his mission, making her an agent in a trial placed across his route rather than an opponent acting from a personal grievance.

The episode presents her authority as divinely grounded: Surasa says that her power comes from a boon granted long ago by Brahmá. Her role is therefore both to confront Hanumán and to test how he responds to a formidable obstacle.

The Encounter with Hanumán

The assembled divine witnesses ask Surasa to test the airborne Hanumán. She agrees, and takes on a shape intended to inspire terror. The challenge is framed as a contest of capability: she may either be outwitted by his guile or overcome by his strength. The account emphasizes that Hanumán is undeterred by her appearance and threats.

Surasa’s response is not to prolong the confrontation. After Hanumán has answered the test, she resumes her former shape. The change from terrifying form back to her own appearance marks the encounter’s resolution: the obstacle has served its purpose, and she no longer bars his way.

Outcome and Narrative Significance

Surasa acknowledges the boon of Brahmá’s grace and sends Hanumán forward to trace Sítá. Her final action turns a potentially delaying confrontation into authorization to continue the rescue mission. The scene tests the hero’s resourcefulness and composure while showing that not every apparent adversary in his path is a lasting enemy.

The episode also gives the leap a structure of successive trials. Surasa’s frightening appearance makes the journey’s danger immediate, but her restoration and encouragement distinguish this test from a defeat or a hostile pursuit. Hanumán leaves the encounter with his objective unchanged: to find Sítá.
