Kumbha

Ramayana

Kumbha is a warrior sent into battle at the king’s command and killed by Sugríva in open combat. The brief account marks his arrival with his brother Nikumbha, calls the pair the bravest and best, and turns the destruction of Kumbha’s bow into the prelude to his death.

Place in the Battle

Kumbha comes through the gates beside Nikumbha, the two sent forth to fight by the king’s behest. The poem singles them out as the bravest and best, presenting their dispatch as a consequential escalation of the battle rather than an incidental entrance.

The Fight with Sugríva

The chiefs meet in the open field. In the fighting, Angad falls and Dwivid reels; when Sugríva sees this, rage impels him to crush the bow Kumbha holds. The broken weapon marks a sharp reversal in the encounter: Kumbha’s bow is gone, and Sugríva closes with him directly.

Death and Narrative Role

Sugríva seizes Kumbha by the wrist and strikes him beneath the neck. The blow is described as crashing through flesh and bone, and Kumbha is left dead. His role in the passage is concentrated in this combat sequence: he is introduced as one of the king’s foremost fighters, enters beside his brother, and is killed as Sugríva turns the battle’s momentum.
