Vibhíshaṇ

Ramayana

Vibhíshaṇ moves from treaty partner in the campaign against Rávaṇ to ruler of the defeated king’s domain. His role connects the military plan against Lanká with the transfer of power after Ráma’s victory.

Treaty and the Campaign

During the preparations for the assault on Lanká, Ráma makes a treaty with Vibhíshaṇ. The agreement is presented alongside the plan for Rávaṇ’s defeat, placing Vibhíshaṇ within the alliance shaping the campaign before the fighting reaches its decisive outcome.

Ruler After Rávaṇ

After Ráma strikes Rávaṇ down in Lanká’s golden town, Vibhíshaṇ is left to reign over his brother’s domain. The succession is the clearest stated consequence of the victory: Rávaṇ’s rule ends, and Vibhíshaṇ takes charge of the realm.

Narrative Role

The account gives Vibhíshaṇ a concise but consequential part in the change of power. The treaty precedes the battle; his rule follows it. In this sequence, he links Ráma’s military success to the postwar government of Lanká.
