Galinda's first day at Crage Hall
Elphaba and Galinda Become Roommates
Due to a misunderstanding with her Ama, Galinda is forced to room with Elphaba, a green-skinned Munchkinlander girl. Galinda is horrified by Elphaba's appearance and poverty. Madame Morrible, the Headmistress, assigns them to a double room, seemingly as a punishment for Elphaba. Galinda tries to get out of the arrangement but fails. She begins to forge alliances with wealthier girls, leaving Elphaba alone. Elphaba, for her part, is studious and withdrawn, spending her time reading. The two girls have little to do with each other at first, their relationship defined by Galinda's social climbing and Elphaba's isolation.
