Nanny Arrives to Help

Melena, overwhelmed by Elphaba's green skin and strange behavior, sends for Nanny, her former nursemaid from Colwen Grounds. Frex collects Nanny from Stonespar End, and on the journey, he confesses that the baby is 'damaged' and green. Nanny, though shocked, is determined to help. She finds Elphaba strapped in a sling to prevent her from biting herself, but the baby's eyes are intelligent and tracking. Nanny, despite her initial revulsion, takes charge, cleaning the baby and trying to soothe her. She also begins to investigate the cause of Elphaba's condition, suspecting either a curse or an elfin heritage. She questions Melena about her activities during Frex's absences, hinting at possible infidelity.
