Addanc of the Lake

Mabinogion

Addanc of the Lake is a daily predator whose concealed attack turns the youths’ repeated deaths into a recurring ordeal. The story establishes its lethal method before showing any direct encounter with it: it watches unseen from behind a pillar at the entrance to its cave and strikes those who approach with a poisonous dart. Peredur is given a stone meant to reverse that advantage, but the supplied account ends before their confrontation or its outcome.

Identity and Setting

Addanc of the Lake lives in a cave and is known to the inhabitants of the Palace of the Sons of the King of the Tortures as the cause of their daily deaths. The creature’s lair lies along Peredur’s route after his encounter with the Black Oppressor, who tells him that the youths are slain there once each day. The name links the monster to the lake, while the episode places its attack within a cave approached by those who travel onward from the palace.

The account does not describe Addanc’s appearance. Instead, it defines the monster through what it does and through the difficulty of perceiving it: Addanc can see anyone entering the cave, while those who enter cannot see it. Its defining power in this episode is thus not a described physical form but a one-sided advantage over anyone who crosses its threshold.

Daily Attacks and Their Aftermath

At the palace, Peredur sees the consequences of the creature’s attacks. A charger arrives carrying a corpse in its saddle; one of the women removes the body, washes it in warm water from a vessel beneath the door, and applies precious balsam. The dead man rises alive and comes to greet Peredur. Two more men arrive in the same manner and are treated likewise. The palace’s inhabitants explain that Addanc kills them once every day, making their deaths and restoration a repeated cycle rather than a single assault.

The youths ride out again the next morning. They refuse Peredur’s request to accompany them, warning that if he is killed there, no one will be able to bring him back to life. Their caution makes the palace’s unusual recovery of the dead a limited protection, not a reason to treat the encounter as safe: Peredur is not among those whom the women can restore if Addanc kills him.

Concealment and Peredur’s Countermeasure

A maiden who meets Peredur on a mound recognizes his purpose and explains the creature’s method. A stone pillar stands at the cave entrance; Addanc watches from behind it, able to see those who enter while remaining unseen itself, and kills them with a poisonous dart. The explanation identifies concealment, rather than a contest of strength, as the immediate danger facing Peredur.

The maiden offers Peredur a stone that will let him see Addanc as he enters without allowing Addanc to see him. In return, she asks him to pledge that he will love her above all women. Peredur agrees, saying he loved her from the first moment he saw her, and asks where he can seek her; she answers that he should look toward India. She then vanishes after placing the stone in his hand. The account presents this object as a tactical answer to Addanc’s hidden position, but does not relate whether Peredur uses it successfully or what happens to the creature.

Narrative Role

Addanc’s episode extends Peredur’s journey through a chain of reported marvels and approaching challenges. The Black Oppressor supplies the route and identifies the daily killer; the palace presents the recurring deaths and restorations; and the maiden reveals how Addanc’s concealment works before giving Peredur a means to counter it. This progression turns the monster into a test whose danger depends on knowledge as much as courage, while leaving the promised encounter unresolved in the surviving passage.
