Gwrhyr Gwalstawt Ieithoedd

Mabinogion

Gwrhyr Gwalstawt Ieithoedd is Arthur’s multilingual courtier and one of the chosen members of the embassy that accompanies Culhwch to seek Olwen. His knowledge of every tongue makes him the company’s natural choice to address strangers, and at the first encounter on the road to Yspaddaden Penkawr’s castle, he goes with Kai to speak to the shepherd Custennin.

Identity and Reputation

Gwrhyr is identified by a gift that is both concise and expansive: he knows all tongues. The narrative gives this distinction twice, naming him among Arthur’s men and then explaining why Arthur calls him to join the expedition. In a company assembled for a perilous quest, his linguistic range is a practical resource: wherever the travelers go, speech need not be an insurmountable barrier.

The text does not elaborate on how he acquired this ability or show him translating between named languages. Instead, the repeated description establishes it as a defining quality, placing him among Arthur’s notable companions alongside men distinguished by other particular capacities.

Appointment to the Embassy

Culhwch’s request for help extends beyond Arthur: he asks the king’s warriors to aid him in winning Olwen, daughter of Yspaddaden Penkawr. Gwrhyr is included among the many named figures summoned for the undertaking. Arthur later calls him specifically because he knows all tongues, making his selection a direct response to the demands of the journey rather than a merely ceremonial place in the company.

The embassy’s other members are chosen for complementary strengths. Bedwyr is famed for speed and prowess despite having one hand; Kynddelig is an excellent guide even in unfamiliar country; Gwalchmai is described as a knight who does not return without achieving the adventure he sought; and Menw can cast a spell of concealment. Gwrhyr’s contribution is distinct: his defining skill concerns communication, and the first obstacle that tests it is a conversation with a stranger.

The Meeting with Custennin

When the travelers reach the plain before the castle, they find an immense flock watched by Custennin, a shepherd whose mastiff is larger than a nine-year-old steed. Kai tells Gwrhyr to go and greet the man. Gwrhyr answers that he had not agreed to go farther than Kai himself; Kai then agrees that they should go together. The moment gives his role a human scale: although selected for his exceptional fluency, he does not approach the potentially dangerous encounter alone.

Menw offers to charm the dog so that it cannot harm anyone, and the group goes up to the mound. Gwrhyr and Kai join the greeting and questioning that establishes the shepherd’s identity, the ownership of the flock, and the castle’s connection to Yspaddaden Penkawr. Custennin reveals that he is Yspaddaden’s brother, oppressed over his possessions, and warns the embassy that none who has previously come seeking Olwen has returned alive. Gwrhyr’s presence brings the company’s renowned knowledge of languages to the threshold of the quest, while the encounter itself makes clear that speech can uncover danger without removing it.
