Bargain with Yevaud

Ged speaks to Yevaud in the Old Speech. The dragon offers to tell Ged the name of the shadow that hunts him in exchange for his own safety. Ged is tempted, but he knows the dragon is treacherous. Instead, he uses the dragon's true name, Yevaud, to force a bargain. He makes Yevaud swear by his name that he and his sons will never come to the Archipelago. The dragon, bound by his oath, agrees. Ged has won a great victory, but he has also refused the dragon's offer of knowledge about the shadow, choosing to follow his own path.
