Reading the summoning spell

Determined to prove himself to the girl, Ged returns to Ogion's house while the mage is out. He takes down the ancient Lore-Books, which Ogion has never opened in his presence. He searches for a spell of self-transformation but instead finds a spell for summoning the spirits of the dead. As he reads it, a horror comes over him. He looks up to find the room dark and sees a shapeless clot of shadow crouching by the door, reaching out to him. Ogion returns, his staff blazing with white light, and dispels the darkness. He scolds Ged for his foolishness and warns him of the dangers of sorcery, but Ged's pride is wounded.
