after leaving Ten Alders
Wandering with Ogion
Ged expects to immediately learn powerful magic, but Ogion teaches him patience and silence. They wander through the villages and forests of Gont, and Ogion refuses to use spells for trivial purposes, even letting rain fall on them. He teaches Ged to observe the natural world, to know the fourfoil plant in all its seasons before learning its true name. Ged grows frustrated, feeling he is learning nothing. Ogion's lesson is that mastery requires patience and that true power comes from understanding, not from the mere performance of spells. This period of quiet apprenticeship is a stark contrast to the dramatic events that will follow.
