spring, five years after Ged first came to Roke
Learning the Doorkeeper's name
Ged, now a sorcerer, returns to the Great House. The Doorkeeper meets him and tells him he can win his freedom by saying the Doorkeeper's name. Ged tries various magical means to discover it, but all fail. Finally, he admits he cannot take or trick the name from the Master. He asks the Doorkeeper to tell him his name. The Doorkeeper smiles and does so. Ged, having learned the name, is allowed to enter the Great House for the last time. This event symbolizes Ged's growth in wisdom: he has learned that true mastery sometimes comes from humility, not force.
