The Long Dance

The school celebrates the Moon's Night and the Long Dance, a festival that occurs once every fifty-two years. The island is filled with music, dancing, and magic. After the dance, a group of students, including Ged, Vetch, and Jasper, hold a private feast in a courtyard. They play with illusions, and Ged is in a wild, fey mood. The rivalry between Ged and Jasper comes to a head when Jasper makes a cutting remark. Ged challenges Jasper to a duel in sorcery, which is forbidden on Roke. Vetch tries to stop them, but the challenge is made.
