Study at the Isolate Tower

Ged is sent to the Isolate Tower to study with the Master Namer, Kurremkarmerruk. He learns the true names of places, things, and beings, understanding that magic consists in the true naming of a thing. The Master teaches that a mage can only control what he can name exactly and wholly, and that this sets the limits of his power. Ged works hard and learns quickly, but the Master gives him only a grudging 'good beginning.' This year of intense study deepens his understanding of the fundamental principles of magic.
