Challenge to Jasper

Ged and Jasper's argument escalates. Jasper taunts Ged, calling him a goatherd and a prentice who doesn't know the First Change. In response, Ged transforms himself into a great falcon for an instant, proving he knows true change, not just illusion. Jasper is shaken but still scornful. He goads Ged into a contest on Roke Knoll, suggesting he summon a spirit from the dead. Ged, driven by pride and rage, accepts the challenge. Vetch tries to intervene, but Ged is beyond reason. He strides off toward Roke Knoll, and the others follow, curious and afraid.
