Voyage into the Open Sea

Ged and Vetch sail eastward, leaving the known lands of Earthsea behind. They pass Astowell, the last inhabited island, and continue into the Open Sea. Ged is driven by the bond with the shadow, and he uses the magewind to speed their journey. The sea grows strange and the power of magic weakens. They run out of food and water, but Ged presses on. Vetch begins to fear that they are being lured to their doom. Ged, however, is certain that they are nearing the end of the quest.
