Summoning of Elfarran

On Roke Knoll, Ged begins the Spell of Summoning. He intends to call the spirit of the legendary lady Elfarran. As he speaks the words, the wind rises and the air grows dark. He cries her name three times, and a pale oval of light appears between his arms, showing a beautiful, sorrowful woman. But then the oval widens into a terrible brightness, a rent in the fabric of the world. Through this breach, a hideous, shapeless shadow-beast leaps out and attacks Ged, clawing at his face and throat. The summoning has gone horribly wrong.
