Encounter with Tsuneko

Yozo meets Tsuneko, a waitress at a Ginza café, and feels an immediate, unspoken kinship with her misery. They spend a night together, and Yozo experiences a rare moment of liberation and happiness. However, his fear of happiness and his habit of clowning drive him to leave her the next morning, making a cynical joke about 'love flying out the window when poverty comes in the door.'
