Father's Death and Release
Yozo's elder brother and Flatfish come to take him out of the hospital. They inform him that his father has died of gastric ulcers. Yozo feels a profound emptiness, as if the vessel of his suffering has become hollow. His brother buys him a house in a remote coastal village and sends an old servant, Tetsu, to look after him.
