Marriage to Yoshiko

With the help of the madam of the Kyobashi bar, Yozo marries Yoshiko and rents an apartment near the Sumida River. He gives up drinking and devotes himself to drawing cartoons. For a time, he experiences a semblance of happiness, enjoying simple pleasures with his trusting wife. He begins to hope that he might become a human being.
