Lost in the Dark Forest

The Dark Forest The Lost Path Dante finds himself in a dark, savage forest, having strayed from the true way. The fear and despair of this place are so intense that death seems little worse. He attempts to climb a sunlit hill but is blocked by three beasts: a leopard, a lion, and a she-wolf. The Appearance of Virgil As Dante retreats, the shade of Virgil appears, offering guidance through Hell and Purgatory to reach salvation. Virgil explains that Beatrice and two other heavenly ladies have interceded for Dante, prompting this journey.

The Gate of Hell and the Neutrals

The Gate of Hell The Inscription Dante and Virgil approach the Gate of Hell, bearing the famous inscription 'Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.' Dante is terrified, but Virgil encourages him. The Neutrals Inside, they encounter the souls of the indifferent, who lived without praise or blame. These are stung by wasps and flies, chasing a blank banner. Dante recognizes the shade of Pope Celestine V, who made the 'great refusal' by abdicating.

Crossing the Acheron

The River Acheron Charon's Boat They reach the river Acheron, where the ferryman Charon transports the damned. Charon refuses to take Dante, a living soul, but Virgil invokes divine will. The earth trembles, and Dante faints. The First Circle: Limbo Dante awakens in Limbo, the first circle, where virtuous pagans and unbaptized infants dwell in desire without hope. He meets the great poets Homer, Horace, Ovid, and Lucan, and visits the Noble Castle of philosophers.

The Second Circle: The Lustful

The Second Circle Minos the Judge At the entrance, Minos judges the damned, wrapping his tail around himself to indicate the circle. He warns Dante, but Virgil silences him. The Infernal Hurricane The lustful are swept forever in a dark storm. Dante sees Semiramis, Dido, Cleopatra, Helen, Achilles, Paris, and Tristan. He speaks with Francesca da Rimini and Paolo, who tell their tragic love story. Dante faints from pity.

The Ninth Circle: Treachery and Lucifer

The Ninth Circle The Frozen Lake Cocytus Dante and Virgil descend to the frozen lake Cocytus, where traitors are immersed in ice. They see the four rounds: Caina, Antenora, Ptolomaea, and Judecca. Dante speaks with Count Ugolino, who gnaws Archbishop Ruggieri's skull. Lucifer At the center, they behold Lucifer, a giant with three faces, chewing Judas, Brutus, and Cassius. Virgil carries Dante down Lucifer's body to the other side, and they climb out to see the stars.
