Attempt to Pawn the Blanket
Desperate, the narrator decides to pawn Hans Pauli's blanket. He takes it to a pawnbroker on Stener's Street, but the man refuses it. He returns home and spreads the blanket back on the bed, feeling ashamed. He then goes to the churchyard and sits, feeling ill. He finds a pebble to suck. He tries to pawn his buttons, but the pawnbroker laughs at him. He is about to give up when a friend, a young man, appears and offers to help.
