night, Part I
Sleeping in the Woods
With no place to stay, the narrator considers the woods. He tries to get shelter from an artist friend, C. Zacharias Bartel, but is turned away. He walks to Bogstad's Wood, makes a bed of heather, and lies down. He hears strange sounds and struggles with fear and anger. He finally falls asleep near dawn. He wakes cold and hungry, and returns to the city. He feels a strange confusion in his head and sits on a step.
