evening, Part II
Hunger and a Paper Cone
A few weeks later, the narrator is again hungry, having not eaten for nearly three days. He sits by the railway bridge, counting his possessions: a penknife and keys. He makes a paper cone, pretending it is full of money, and throws it on the pavement. A policeman picks it up and opens it, finding nothing. The narrator laughs hysterically. He then falls into a drowsy state, dreaming of Princess Ylajali and a palace of jewels.
