Begging for a Bone

The narrator is terribly hungry. He goes to the meat bazaar and begs a bone for a dog, pretending he has one. He receives a bone with some meat on it. He hides in a passage and tries to eat it, but vomits. He becomes furious and curses God. He throws the bone away. He then wanders the streets, feeling delirious. He meets the 'Commandor,' who gives him half-a-sovereign. The narrator is overwhelmed with gratitude and weeps.
