night, Part IV

Eviction from the Lodging House

The narrator is evicted from the lodging house after a quarrel. He spends the night in the anteroom. The next morning, he leaves before dawn. He wanders the streets, cold and hungry. He sits by the harbor and tries to write, but cannot. He returns to the lodging house to say goodbye, but the landlady throws him out. A messenger brings him half-a-sovereign from Ylajali. In a fit of pride, he throws the money at the landlady. He then collapses in the street.
