later that morning, Part I
Morning Walk and Pawn
The narrator goes out, stealing past his landlady to avoid her. He feels exhilarated by the city's noise, but a woman with a single tooth disgusts him. He meets an old lame man who begs for a halfpenny for milk. The narrator pawns his waistcoat for one-and-sixpence, gives the man a shilling, and then buys bread and cheese. He heads to the park to write an article on 'Philosophical Cognition,' but realizes he left his pencil in the pawned waistcoat.
