evening, Part III
Confession to the Shopkeeper
The narrator returns to the provision shop and confesses the theft to the shop-boy. The boy is confused and does not press charges. The narrator explains that he gave the money to a poor woman. He leaves, feeling both relieved and ashamed. He goes home and lies down, feeling ill. He remembers Ylajali and has a vision of fire. He wakes in a sweat the next morning, feverish and weak. He gets up and goes out, despite his condition.
