midday, Part I
Encounter with Ylajali
Returning to fetch his pencil, the narrator passes two ladies and accidentally brushes one's arm. She blushes, and he is captivated. He invents the name 'Ylajali' for her and follows her, pretending she is losing a book. He feels a mad impulse to annoy her, but her companion dismisses him as drunk. He stops at her house, St. Olav's Place No. 2, and she looks at him from a window. He feels a strange connection and leaves, calling her name.
