evening, Part III
The Lady in Black
For several evenings, a lady dressed in black stands under a lamp-post opposite the narrator's door. He is curious and nervous. One evening, he is hungry again, having not eaten since the previous day. He goes to the Opland Café to find his bank acquaintance, but fails. He walks to the palace, feeling angry and desperate. He thinks about stealing. He meets a girl on Carl Johann Street and goes with her, but when he admits he has no money, she leaves him. He then gives her a moral lecture.
