Rejection and Despair

The narrator goes to see Christy the grocer, but is rejected because he dated his application 1848. He becomes furious and behaves aggressively in the street. He then goes to a strange house and rings a bell, pretending to look for an invalid gentleman. The lady mistakes him for a beggar. He feels humiliated. He tries to pawn his shaving tickets and tie to a bank acquaintance, but the man has no money. He wanders the streets, crying and feeling wretched.
