afternoon, Part IV
Destroying the Manuscript
The narrator, in despair, tears his drama manuscript in two and tramples on his hat. A policeman watches him. He then goes to the cake woman and demands cakes, claiming she owes him. He eats several cakes but is still hungry. He leaves one cake for a little boy he saw earlier. He then goes to the wharf and sees a Russian barque, the Copégoro. He asks the captain for work and is taken on as a sailor.
