The Happolati Invention

In the park, the narrator meets an old man with a newspaper parcel. He becomes obsessed with the parcel, imagining it contains secrets. To start a conversation, he lies about living at St. Olav's Place and invents a landlord named Happolati. He spins an elaborate tale about Happolati being a minister in Persia and inventing an electric psalm-book. The old man believes everything, which angers the narrator, who then verbally abuses him until the man flees.
