Evening at Ylajali's Apartment

The narrator meets Ylajali at St. Olav's Place. She takes him to her apartment. They talk and flirt. He tells her about his poverty and his theft. She is frightened but still affectionate. He knocks over the candle, and they struggle in the dark. She begs him to stop, and he does. She then tells him he can kiss her. He leaves, feeling confused and hurt. He gives a long, rambling speech about his sensitivity, and she finally embraces him. He leaves, feeling both loved and tormented.
