The Encounter with Charles Martel and Cunizza da Romano
Dante and Beatrice ascend to the sphere of Venus, where the souls of lovers appear. Charles Martel, the son of Charles II of Anjou, speaks with Dante. He explains that different natures are suited to different roles in society, and that the diversity of talents is part of God's plan. He laments that his brother Robert has misruled his kingdom. Another soul, Cunizza da Romano, speaks of her past sins and her present joy in God's will. Folco of Marseilles, a former troubadour, recounts his sinful past and then praises Rahab, the harlot of Jericho, who was saved by her faith. He condemns the corruption of the Church and the neglect of the Holy Land. This episode explores the themes of divine providence and the redemption of sinners.
