The Story of Count Ugolino
In Antenora, Dante sees two souls frozen in one hole, the upper gnawing the skull of the lower. The upper soul is Count Ugolino, who tells the story of his imprisonment and starvation with his sons and grandsons in the Tower of Famine. He describes how Archbishop Ruggieri, whom he is now devouring, imprisoned them and had the door nailed shut. Over days, his sons died one by one, and finally, blind and desperate, Ugolino died of hunger. His story is a harrowing account of betrayal and inhuman cruelty. Dante then curses Pisa for its barbarity. This episode is one of the most powerful in the Inferno, exploring the depths of human suffering and the desire for vengeance.
