The Meeting with Sordello
Dante and Virgil continue their ascent and encounter a solitary soul, Sordello of Mantua. When Virgil reveals that he is also a Mantuan, Sordello embraces him with joy. Dante then delivers a passionate invective against Italy, lamenting its political divisions and the neglect of the Emperor Albert. He contrasts the noble love of country shown by Sordello with the corruption and strife of contemporary Italy. Sordello then offers to guide them to a place where they can rest for the night. This episode is a powerful expression of Dante's political ideals and his longing for a unified Italy.
