Virgil Appears and Offers Guidance

As Dante retreats before the she-wolf, a figure appears before him, seeming faint from long silence. Dante cries out for pity, and the shade reveals himself as Virgil, the Roman poet born 'sub Julio' who sang of the just son of Anchises, Aeneas. Virgil explains that the she-wolf will allow no one to pass her way until the Greyhound comes who shall hunt her back to Hell. He offers to guide Dante through the eternal place, where he will hear the desperate lamentations of the damned and see those who are contented in the fire because they hope to come to the blessed people. Beyond that, a worthier soul—Beatrice—will lead him to see God. Dante, recognizing Virgil as his master and the source of his beautiful style, eagerly accepts the offer, and Virgil moves on, with Dante following behind. This encounter establishes Virgil as the embodiment of human reason and classical wisdom, the necessary first guide on the journey to salvation.
