Aarfy Rapes and Murders Michaela

In Rome, Aarfy rapes the simple-minded maid Michaela and then throws her out the window to her death. When Yossarian discovers the body and confronts him, Aarfy is unconcerned, believing he will not be punished for killing a poor servant girl. The M.P.s arrive and arrest Yossarian for being AWOL, while apologizing to Aarfy for the intrusion. The incident is a stark illustration of class and gender privilege, and it shows the moral rot at the heart of the military system, where a murderer can go free while a deserter is punished.
