Chief White Halfoat Dies of Pneumonia
Chief White Halfoat, true to his word, dies of pneumonia in the hospital. His death is a form of passive resistance, a final act of defiance against the white man's world. It also opens up the job of squadron intelligence officer, which Nately applies for in a doomed attempt to stay overseas with his whore. Chief White Halfoat's death is a fulfillment of his own prophecy and a reminder of the novel's recurring theme of self-destructive rebellion.
