Snowden's Death Over Avignon

On the mission to Avignon, the plane is piloted by the inexperienced Huple and the panicky Dobbs. Dobbs seizes the controls, plunging the plane into a terrifying dive. After they level out, Yossarian discovers that the radio-gunner, Snowden, has been mortally wounded. Yossarian crawls back to treat him, finding a large wound in his leg. He bandages it, only to discover a much more severe, hidden wound under Snowden's flak suit. Snowden's entrails spill out, and he dies, whispering 'I'm cold.' The experience shatters Yossarian, revealing the ultimate truth: man is matter, and death is the final, meaningless end.
