during the period of the Bologna siege
Havermeyer Shoots Field Mice
Havermeyer, a lead bombardier who never takes evasive action, spends his nights in his tent shooting field mice with a .45 pistol. He uses peanut brittle as bait and a tripwire to turn on a light, then gleefully kills the terrified creatures. His actions disturb Hungry Joe, who lives nearby and suffers from screaming nightmares. Havermeyer's casual cruelty and his refusal to take evasive action on missions, which endangers his fellow airmen, mark him as a figure of mindless aggression and a tool of the military system.
