The Great Big Siege of Bologna

The group is assigned to bomb the ammunition dumps at Bologna, a mission everyone fears. A series of postponements due to rain, diarrhea, and a moved bomb line creates a prolonged period of dread. The men become obsessed with the bomb line on the map, hoping it will move north and make the mission unnecessary. Yossarian, in a desperate act, sneaks out at night and moves the bomb line himself, causing the mission to be canceled. The siege is a masterful depiction of collective anxiety and the psychological torment of waiting for death.
