Nately and Dobbs Are Killed in Mid-Air Collision

On a mission to bomb a disabled Italian cruiser at La Spezia, Dobbs, piloting erratically, collides with another plane, shearing off its tail. Both planes crash into the sea, killing everyone on board, including Nately and Dobbs. The collision is a sudden, senseless tragedy, a result of incompetence and the chaos of war. Nately's death is a devastating blow to Yossarian and the chaplain, and it directly leads to Yossarian's final refusal to fly.
