after Nately's death
The Chaplain's Interrogation
The chaplain is abducted by three mysterious officers and interrogated in a basement. They accuse him of being Washington Irving, stealing a plum tomato, and various other crimes. The interrogation is a Kafkaesque nightmare of circular logic and intimidation, designed to break him. The chaplain is terrified but eventually released, though he is warned that he is under surveillance. The experience radicalizes him, giving him a new resolve to fight against the injustices he sees.
