Clevinger Disappears

Clevinger's plane disappears into a cloud over the sea and is never seen again. No wreckage is found, and he is simply gone. His disappearance is a mysterious and unsettling event, highlighting the arbitrary and inexplicable nature of death in war. It also removes one of Yossarian's few intellectual foils, leaving him to face the absurdity of the war without Clevinger's rationalizing influence.
