Major Major Becomes Squadron Commander
After Major Duluth is killed, Colonel Cathcart appoints the hapless Major Major as squadron commander. The promotion isolates Major Major from the other men, who now resent him. He retreats into his office, forging Washington Irving's name on documents and avoiding all personal contact. His story is a tragicomedy of social awkwardness and the corrupting nature of authority, showing how a well-meaning individual can be crushed by a system he cannot understand.
