McWatt Buzzes the Beach and Kills Kid Sampson
McWatt, in a moment of reckless play, flies his plane low over the raft where Kid Sampson is standing. A propeller slices Kid Sampson in half, killing him instantly. The beach erupts in chaos and horror. McWatt, realizing what he has done, circles higher and higher, then flies his plane into a mountain, killing himself and Doc Daneeka, who is listed as a passenger. The double death is a devastating turning point, shattering the remaining illusions of safety and camaraderie.
