Yossarian's Nightmare Walk Through Rome

After the brothel is raided, Yossarian wanders through the dark, rain-soaked streets of Rome. He witnesses a series of horrific scenes: a man beating a dog, a man beating a child, a woman being assaulted, a man having convulsions, and a civilian being arrested by police. The city is a vision of hell, a 'eternal city' of suffering and injustice. The walk is a descent into the heart of darkness, forcing Yossarian to confront the pervasive cruelty and meaninglessness of the world he is trying to escape.
